Reflection Post Questions

1. What did you learn?
I learned a lot about the Peking Opera; too much to write out on a piece of paper. The thing that I learned the most about is the performers. I learned about the special meanings of costumes, lianpu, and the importance of tones and movements.

2. What was your research question?
My research question was: What was and is the Beijing Opera? (How did it work? What time period did it flourish in? What is a brief history of-? Effects? etc,...)

3. What was the answer to your research question?
The Beijing Opera is a very unique form of opera in China. It is a combination of singing, acrobatics, martial arts, and dance.
There is no easy way to explain how it works. Most actors start at young ages, some younger than twelve, and train for years in order to perfect the art. Although the stage is very simple, there are a lot of small things with big meanings in the facial paint, costumes, music, and movements. Chinese Opera is a very traditional for of art in China. Although not as much as the years before, people world wide still come to see this intriguing form of art.
The Beijing Opera formed about 200 years ago and has grown and developed since. It had to say when it really "flourished". Although Beijing opera-the theatre of the capital-has not been around that long, there are over 300 different forms of Chinese Opera that are all loosley simular and have been around a very very long time. Beijing Opera comes from the Anhua and Hubei provinces troupes.

4. Did your final product answer that question?
In a round about way, Yes.

5. How?
If some one was to come up to me and ask me if i knew about Peking Opera, I would be able to say: "Yes, I know a bit about it." Through my research, I can honestly say that I have a better understanding of really WHAT it is and what it's about.

6. What did you do well on the project?
I feel that I had a decent visual from my "presentation". I also thought it was pretty cool that I was able to bring in a recording of a preformance. I think i aslo did a good job on my research and blog posts.

7. What could you have improved on the project?
I feel that I could have definately used my time better. If I did, I feel that my project(and this is my own opinion) would not have become so sloppy. I think I should not have picked such a general topic and maybe gone for something more specific.

8. What would you change about what you did on the project?
If I could change anything on this project, I think I would honestly change my topic. It's not that the Beijing Opera was not an interesting topic, it's just that there are topics that I could have done that would makethe job a lot nicer and cleaner.

9. What would you change about the assignment itself?
Less computer work, but that's a personal opinion. Although i believe that the blogger and bookmarking is an organized and easy way to keep your information together, I'm not very good with computers, so I personally would prefer less-such as less posts and what not.

10. What grade do you think you deserve on the project? Why?
A low B. I did most of the work required, although towards the end, I'll admit that I did get a little sloppy and considering all the all the time we had to work on this project, there's no excuse for it coming out half as good as it was origionally planned. However, in contrast, I spent a lot of time working on this project. More than any other project I think I've done this school year.

Daily Progress #15

My goal for the weekend was at the very least, to have my diorama completed. Unfortunately, my diorama has been reduced from what I origionally planned due to lack of time.(I procrastinated for too long and am now running out of time.Only two more days left.)
Saturday, I started to assemble my diorama. Luckily, my sister has lent me her camera and I was able to take pictures of my progress(which is pretty cool).
(This is what I had done around 9 O'clock-Saturday night,.....not much.)

(This is what I had Sunday afternoon.)
(This is what I have currently-Unfortionately, it got a little sloppy, but considering how i'm making it, it's reasonable.)

My next action will be to make my characters and start typing up my information.

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Daily Progress #14

We only have four more days to complete this project. It coming down to crunch time.
Today, my goal was to have drawn out my plan, which I didn't manage last class. Unfortunately, I didn't manage it today either. I've almost decided that it may be one of those things that is very hard to write down on a piece of paper.
I still have to decide on how I'm going to go about my characters(the four main roles of peking opera). I think that if I can manage to find a ride, I'd like to go to Garden Ridge or Michelle's or something to see if i can find any thing to make this project a little easier.
My next goal(aside from drawing out my plan....again) is to get started. I already have my "box", now i just have to fill it. I also want to figure out what information I want to talk about. I think I just want to do a little of everything-but I want to make sure I talk a little about my diorama too.
Notes from last day on the project: I actually got the Garden Ridge and was rather disappointed that they didn't sell as much craft stuff as they used to-they didn't even sell paint. Maybe Michelle's would have been the better place to go.....

Daily Progress #13

Today, my goal was to start on my plan. I have it all thought out, I just have to draw it out and start planning out index cards(to read off of if I forget me information).
Today, I came in late, so I didn't have much time to work on my plan, but I did do some more research on peking opera theaters.
My next action will be to do my plan, show it to the teacher and start on my project!

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Daily Progress #12

Today, I am going to try to start on my draft for my plan. I think I'll shoot for a draw out plan.
I found some nice pictures of the Huguang Peking Opera House today that I hope will be helpful. When making my diorama, I think I will base my stage of this Opera House.
My next action will be to come up with a solid paper for my plan and over Spring Break, I hope to get started over on making my models and stage.

Daily Progress #11

Today, I wanted to get 30 Index Cards in. That was my goal.
I finished that goal.
My next action will be to find the movie Forever Enthralled and to find out what the next step is.
(Notes from last day on the project: Unfortunately, i could never find this movie, but i think I'll keep looking even after the project is over.)

Index Card 30

Qi xiao fu/ Painted Faces(1988)
www.imdb.com/title/tt0095937/
"The story is about their teacher Master Yu and his school. The movie is about the Peking Opera School that Jackie Chan, Samo Hung, and Yuen Biao (the Lucky Stars) attended as young men. The movie is about their teacher Master Yu Ho and his school." This is all the information that I could find over this movie. It's not much....At all. The main reason I even linked it is because I'm trying to find movies over my topic. I think it will help to watch it so much as to research it.

Index Card 29

Ba wang bie ji/ Farewell My Concubine (1993)
www.imdb.com/title/tt0106332/
"The story of two men, who met as apprentices in the Peking Opera, and stayed friends for over 50 years." This is a very harsh movie that tells the tale of two friends who meet together at the Beijing Opera and grow up together acting and performing together. It's a really sad movie and I would go so far as to say this movie is one of the main reasons I why I picked this topic.

Index Card 28

Mei Lanfang (2008)
www.imdb.com/title/tt0851532/
"A biographical account of Mei Lanfang, China's greatest opera star. " If i can find this movie I would love to watch it. I haven't seen the traier, but it sounds interesting...Something I'll definiatly look into.

I got 8 more index cards in so I only have 2 more to go for homework or next class until Mr. N assigns more. Today, i found a lot more websites and some good picture.

Status Report Assignment

Status Report Assignment

1.What have I accomplished on my project so far?
I have done a lot research and postings. I've decided on my final project and am already thinking about how to do it.
2.What do I still have left to do?
I still have to finish out all my posts and start on the final project.
3.What has been harder than I thought it would be?
Finding good websites and pictures. It get harder to find good websites the father you go along.
4.What has been easier than I thought it would be?
Posting. It doesn't take much to do a post. You just have to stay focused enough to get down what you need to get down.
5.How would I do my project differently if I could start over again?
I might have chosen a different topic. Even now I have a slight regret over the topic that i've chosen, but I have firmly decided that I've come too far to switch topics now. If I do a good job on my topic, it should be pretty interesting.
6.What do I need to get accomplished before Spring Break?
I'd like to have all my research done and completed. I then want to start planning out my final product.

Daily Progress #8

Today, I'm going to do my statis report assignment. I also want to see if I can find any books in the library over my topic. ALSO, i'd like to keep finding index cards.
Today, I did my statis report and asked the librarian to help me find books over the opera(and they were very helpful-They even printed me out an article and small sections from refrerance books).
My next action will be to put all the books/articles up in delicious abd blogger.

Daily Progress #7

My goal for today was to continue trying CONTINUE(once again) to get these 18 index cards and 7 progress posts in!
Today, I got another two index cards in-leaving me with two more to go. I've noticed that finding good/useful websites are harder to come by-which is a shame.
I found a book that covers the peking opera and it makes me wonder if I can find a book at the library that may be useful. We'll see.
Anyhow, my next action will be to finish my last two note cards out and pray that we wont have to do anymore. I also want to start organizing my information.

Daily Progress #5

My action upon entering the day is to shoot for the goal of 18 Index Cards and 7 Daily Progress Posts(-an A!). My goal is mainly catching up with the class and getting a good grade on posts.
Today, I posted a lot of Index Cards and now I have 11 Index Cards(need 7 more to get an A) and I still only have 3 Daily Progress Posts(need 4 more to get an A). -with the math included.
I haven't actually gone through all of the sites that I found, but there's a lot there that I'll hopefully soon have the time to look at them all and be able to put 2 and 2 together to answer my research questions.
My next action is to get those 7 Index Cards and 2 more Progress Posts in.

Daily Progress #3

My action upon entering the day was to start finding information covering the topic of the Beijing Opera.
Today, I started to look at other websites and picture that I may find helpful later on and began to "index card" them.
What I did today has helped me answer my research question by starting to cover some of the information that I need. I've began to look at the roles played-such as the female and male roles and the "clown" or comedy actor. I also know from my research that most actors that performed had to be skilled in acrobatics. And so on.......
My next action will be to keep on my search to find the perfect information to include in my project-I also want to begin brain storming what my final project will look like.

FINAL PRODUCTION SELECTION

1)My research question is: What was the Beijing Opera? (How did it work? What time period did it flourish in? What is a brief history of-? Effects? etc,...)

2)I would like my project to be kind of a Diorama of a basic theater and actors; also, what it's like back stage with a brief lecture to explain about my topic and list some facts.-I am also considering doing drawings of close ups on actors and the like.

3)I like the idea of this form because without a visual, I feel that people wont quite grasp the main idea of this form of theater. Chinese Opera itself is in it's self a visual performance. I feel I can do it the best justice by doing a detailed visual of such.

4)I' hoping the finished project will provide both a good visual and a short-sweet-and-to-the-point kind of lecture that will entail good, yet still easy to follow information over my topic.

5)I feel that the finished project will display mastery by showing that I understand the meaning and having a good feel for what Chinese Opera is; And, what it's all about. My project should also show that I understand the CORRECT setup of the show and all the meanings and ways that make Chinese Opera what it is.

6)Agenda:
1. I will search for information, sort it all out(making sense of it all-if you will) and finding all that I will put into my "lecture".
2.After that, I want to have all my info written down SOMEHOW, so I have something to look at while explaining my topic.
3.THE DIORAMA! I can only hope to the be able to find a detailed, yet accurate set up to how the plays are set up and a glimpse or to as to what's backstage.
4.Putting it all together....Enough said.
5. The finishing touches....

7)????

ALL OF THE INFORMATION ABOVE(hopefully wont have to be completely set in stone) MAY NOT STAY THE SAME AS I PROGRESS THROUGH THIS "ENDEAVOR".

Daily Progress #2

2/12/09
My goal for today is to once again, try to decide on a topic for this project. I also want to, once I decide on my topic, to get a move on into the seven product prospective questions.
-----------------------------------
I have decided to do my project over the Chinese Opera. It was a tough decision, even in the end, but I've finally come to a good topic that I think(hope) I can stick with.
What I did today has helped me find a question to answer for my research project.
My next action is to start collecting data.

Daily Progress #1

(2/6/09)
Friday was our first day of our World History class. On Friday, I had a list of some of the ideas of what I considered doing my project about. My goal for the day was to do a brush over of the topics wrote down and try to decide what I want to do for my project.
On Friday, I still hadn't found the topic that I wanted to research; however, I did shorten my list. I also got both my blog spot and Delicious accounts set up.
What I did Friday didn't really help the answer to my research question because I have still not decided what I want my research to be over.
My next action will be to decide on a topic and start my research!
